Summer School in the Tech-Ed Department

Instructor: Mr. Sherman

This class is designed for students entering grades 7 and 8. Map Reading, Orienteering, and Geocaching will be offered in 2 separate 2 hour blocks. Block one will run from 8AM to 10 PM and block two will run from 10 AM to 12 PM. Class size will be limited to the first 20 students for each session.

Introduction to state highway map reading
Features on a map

Measuring distance from point to point on a highway map
Measuring both a straight line distance between points on a map, and following a designated route

Figuring out the best route to take from one point to another taking into consideration the type of roads that will be traveled

Introduction to a topographic map
Scale
Legend
Terrain features
Contour lines

Introduction to grid squares and grid coordinates
Identify grid coordinates with 10m accuracy

Compass reading
Shooting an azimuth

Putting map reading and using a compass together
Plotting points
Figuring azimuths
Getting a pace count
Using a compass to travel from known point to known point

Introduction to a Global Positioning System (GPS)
Basic Functions of a GPS
Using a GPS to travel from known point to known point

 Point to point navigation on a Road Map
 Reading Grid coordinates (8 digits) on a topographic map
 Identify terrain features on a topographic map
 Individual pace count for 100m
 Locating known points using a compass and a pace count
 Locating known points using a GPS
